My invitation to join Threads

Bye, bye, birdie?

When Elon Musk bought Twitter, I decided to stay. But with his latest round of disastrous decisions, it was time to find another platform. I tried Mastodon, but I couldn’t get any engagement, even when I invited people. One person told me it was too complicated.

Then, Meta introduced Threads.

I’ve raised issues about Facebook before, and I’m as much of a fan of Mark Zuckerberg as I am of Elon Musk. In fact, my work-in-progress Christina’s Portrait has a few things to say about him, his creation, and a candidate his platform helped get elected.

Two teen characters in Christina’s Portrait complain about Facebook, even as they use it to find out about Christina.

But when Threads came online, I signed up right away. I was amazed how easy it was to get started. I already have an Instagram account, it automatically transferred my information and followers. I was greeted with a full feed of posts from people I know and topics that interest me. As more people joined, it was easy to follow them. I connected with other writers and people I’ve admired for a while. So far, Threads is giving me a positive vibe.

I must give Meta credit where it’s due. They’ve created a positive user experience so far. It’s like I’ve always said: good technology is useful technology. And Threads is good technology. Of course, it’s not perfect. I’d like for it to have a browser interface so I can use it on my computer. There will be issues with privacy, moderation, and dealing with bad actors. And it’s just a matter of time before it has its first big scandal. But as long as Threads does the job for me, I’ll increase my engagement with it.

And Twitter? I plan to keep my account, but I won’t be as active on it. While it’s important to diversify our social media presence, we must be selective about which platforms we give the most attention. For me, it’s TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. This can change, because technology is always changing. As long as Threads does the job for me, I’ll continue to use it.

You can find me on Threads at my usual social media handle, @maswriter.
