Susan Friedman Avila

We lost one of our classmates, Susan Friedman Avila, who passed away on October 31, 2007. Her husband Michael sent the following e-mail:

Halloween, twenty-six years ago – three months after our wedding, Susan and I moved into our new home in North Hills, California. Today, Susan is gone forever – leaving us with vast emptiness in our hearts.

Quietly and peacefully, in the early hours of the day, Susan moved on.

Last night she was able to communicate by either grunting, opening her mouth when she wanted something or by closing her mouth shut when she did not want to take her pain medicine anymore. She was angry at the events that were taking place and did not want to stop fighting. I could tell by the way her chin looked, crunching her teeth together.

I spent many hours talking to her and she quietly listen as memories came. When describing happy events, she would make small sounds of approval. When remembering painful or sad events, she was shedding tears. I knew she was with me, listening.

Around 1:00 am. I gave her a kiss goodnight and told her I needed to sleep. She responded with an approval grunt. I woke up at 6:30 am, could hear the medical equipment working, the oxygen flowing but could not hear her breathing. Her body was warm, her cheeks cold as ice, and her body telling me that her soul was gone forever.

We need to be happy for her because she is not suffering anymore. She left us knowing that she had so many friends and family that truly cared for her...every one of you.

Thank you so much to all of you that were able to visit and along you always brought a smile.

As per her wishes, a funeral will not take place. She requested a cremation instead. A memoriam has not been set yet. An announcement will follow.
