Words that inform and inspire
Welcome to the new Matthew Arnold Stern newsletter!

In this first issue, I talk about my upcoming events, featured posts for Halloween, and an opportunity to be interviewed for this newsletter.

First, a brief introduction...

First, I want to give all of you a warm welcome. If you previously subscribed to my website, you'll receive these monthly newsletters. If you're new here, hello!

A little bit about myself: I'm an award-winning public speaker and author. I've published four novels, including Amiga and The Remainders, and a guidebook for impromptu public speaking, Mastering Table Topics. I've moderated panels and given presentations at Indie Author Day and Loscon. (More on those later.)

In this newsletter, I'll keep you up-to-date about my latest news, blog posts, events, featured books, and include useful articles about publishing and writing.

Upcoming events in Southern California

If you're in Southern California in November, here's where you can see me:

  • Sunday, November 5, 10:00 am–4:00 pm:
Indie Author Day, Anaheim Central Library.
I will moderate four panels about writing and publishing. Get full details from the Anaheim Library website.
  • Saturday and Sunday, November 25–26:
    Loscon 49, LAX Marriott.
I will participate in and moderate panel discussions about writing. Get full details from the Loscon website.
My featured book: The Remainders
Information about The Remainders

A homeless son and troubled father must reconnect in a novel called a "powerful page-turner" and "a fascinating story about real next-door people." Get The Remainders now on Kindle and Kindle Unlimited and in paperback wherever books are sold.

Featured posts for spooky season

Halloween is coming up in the United States and other countries. If you feel like putting on a costume or watching some scary movies, I have a few featured posts to put you in the festive mood.

  • Horror movies: Fantasy lessons for the real world
Do you watch horror movies just for the thrills? What you might not realize is that horror movies and stories were designed to teach important moral lessons. I look at several classic horror films and the messages they send.
  • Beware of foreign influences!
Not all countries celebrate Halloween, but differences in cultures are nothing to be afraid of. I talk about how learning about different cultures can be helpful, especially for young children.
  • Ghost story
It's a real-life ghost story, but it has a tragic tale behind it. It's about a murder that happened our high school 47 years ago, and we're still grappling with it today. This story inspires my upcoming novel, Christina's Portrait.
Elsewhere on social media: A song that inspired me

On TikTok, I post videos about writing, my books, and various other topics. In a recent post, I talk about a song that inspired me at a time when I needed it the most.
