Fun a Day Reseda – Day 1

Fun a Day Reseda, January 1
Even though high school wasn’t fun every day…

This month is Fun a Day Reseda. It’s a community event where you pick a creative project (such as painting, poetry, photography, or revising a novel), work on it each day in January, and present your work in a group show, which will be held on February 28 and March 1.

Even though I don’t live in Reseda anymore, I am participating in this event. Why? Because Reseda is where I learned how to be creative.

I was interested in art at a very early age. My dad was an excellent artist, although he never pursued his craft professionally. He did work as a photographer for a few years and used one of the bedrooms in our Reseda home as a darkroom.

I got into art when I was in school. Back then, the arts were an important part of the public school curriculum. I performed in choirs and school plays. I did well in art classes. (A pointillism drawing I did in ninth grade was included in a Los Angeles Unified School District art show.) But it was at Reseda High School that I found my passion for writing — a craft that I was able to turn into a career.

My Fun a Day Reseda project is to finish the next revision of The Ghosts of Reseda High. I will publish the results of your beta surveys and announce the winner of the drawing shortly. I plan to do a reading at the event. In the meantime, I’ll keep you posted on my status, and the insights I gain while editing the book on this site. Look for “Fun a Day Reseda” posts.

Wherever you are, I hope you dedicate time this year to exercise your creativity and add fun to your day.
