The Butterfly

When my daughter Stephanie was in the third grade, she entered this essay in the PTA Reflections contest. She won first place for her school in the category for grades three through five. Photos from her awards ceremony at school are after the essay (click for full-size picture), and you can view the video from the link to the left.

by Stephanie Stern

I hold in my hand this butterfly.  Her wings are fluttering in my palm. Her tiny legs tickle my fingers. When the bell rings, I let her go. I work until recess, and I catch her again. My friends surround me. We take turns holding this butterfly. The butterfly wiggles in my hand to get out. I open my hand to let her free. She flies away and lands on a flower. I say goodbye to the butterfly and go to class. I work and work on my math. Then, it is time to go home. I meet my mom at the gate. We walk home. On the way, I talk about my day. When we finally get home, I eat a snack and do my homework. While I am doing my homework, I see the butterfly flutter past me. I am happy. Tomorrow is a new day.
