Fun a Day Reseda – Day 24: The Most Important Scenes Are the Hardest to Write

Fun a Day Reseda - Day 24I’ve spent the past few days rewriting a single scene in The Ghosts of Reseda High. It was a difficult scene to write. It was difficult emotionally. It was difficult in how it forced me to reevaluate my characters. But the rewrites took a scene that was sort of a throwaway and made it important. The revised scene takes some of my characters in a different direction and will make the rest of the story stronger. So, the amount of time and effort it took to make that scene right was worthwhile.

The most important scenes are the hardest to write. But all things of great value are the most difficult to do.

The belief “this will be so worth it when it’s done” gets us through all sorts of challenges. We not only get the satisfaction of achieving something great, but we grow through the experience. The thrill of accomplishing one goal drives us to work on the next one. We find the excitement of pushing ourselves greater than the lazy comfort of mediocrity.

This is why I feel Fun a Day is a great experience for Reseda. The challenge of creating art can be extended to creating all sorts of things. Like converting empty storefronts into vibrant businesses. Encouraging community involvement to improve schools, youth programs, and neighborhoods. These are difficult tasks, but the most important tasks are the hardest to do — and the most rewarding.
