I took home my first trophy at a Founder's District speech contest when
I came in second in the evaluation contest. I was in a field of the seven
best evaluators in Founder's District, which covers all of Orange County
and eastern Los Angeles County.
To be able to compete at the District level, I first competed at my club,
Best Software Toastmasters of Irvine, California. I went on to compete against
contestants from other area clubs in the Area G-4 contest and then
competed with other area contest winners in South County at the
Division G contest. The evaluation contest challenges a speaker's skills
in listening, observing, analyzing, and coaching. Contestants listen to a
test speech and give a two-to-three-minute talk that provides useful,
encouraging feedback to motivate the speaker toward further
improvement. The winner of the evaluation contest was Lawrence Cox of
Division B, who gave an exceptional and motivating evaluation. The
competition was held at the Founder's District Fall Conference, which was
at the Radission Resort Hotel in Buena Park, near Knott's Berry Farm. The
District also held the humorous contest. The winner of that competition
was Jeffrey Doss of Division A. Runner up was Becky Cote of Division C.
Winners of the humorous contest go on to compete at the Regional
conference, which is typically held in late spring. More information
about the Conference, including photos, is on the Founder's District Web
site. The spring contest season will start again in February or March,
with competitions in table topics and International. The next District
conference will be April 27, 2002. Related Topics
