Matthew Earns the Distinguished Toastmaster Award

April 7, 2004 (Updated January 25, 2005)

I was formally presented with my Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award at the Best Software Toastmasters club meeting in Irvine, California on Wednesday, April 7, 2004. I was also presented with my DTM medal at January 20, 2005 Founders District Executive Council meeting.

DTM is the highest ranking in Toastmasters. Members earn this award after completing communications and leadership tracks, consisting of speaking projects from Toastmasters manuals and service and leadership projects. I earned my DTM in February after completing the High-Performance Leadership program. In this program, I exercised leadership skills by putting together a service project. My project was to start the Judges Bureau for Founder's District where we find judges for community speech contests.

I joined Toastmasters in September 1991 at Irvine Toastmasters. I earned my first ranking, Competent Toastmaster (CTM), in Feburary 1993. I went on to complete Advanced Toastmaster Bronze (ATM-B) in July 1997, ATM Silver (ATM-S) in May 1999, and the first leadership award, Competent Leader (CL) in December 1999. In January 2000, I transferred to Best Software Toastmasters. There, I earned ATM Gold (ATM-G) in May 2003 after completing a Speechcraft program for Best Software employees.

At the Best Software Toastmasters meeting, I was presented with a plaque from Toastmasters International and a gold-tone name badge designating me as a DTM.

After the presentation, I gave the speech, "Another Mountain to Climb" (More info) describing how looking for new challenges encourages people to stay with any avocation with passion for years. I have already started climbing my new mountain by starting my second CTM award.

The following photos show me receiving my DTM medal from District Governor Norm Cook (right) at the January 2005 meeting.
