"Bad Books" Selected for High School Forensics Competition

November 19, 2002

My speech, "Bad Books" was selected by the Downers Grove, Illinois South High School Forensic Team as an Oratorical Declamation composition to be performed in their speech competitions. In selecting the speech, Varsity National Forensic League member Joshua R. Meyer said, "A writer's work is not normally chosen at this stage, but your work proves to be of the correct nature we were looking for." He added, "We are pleased to be using such a talented speech, written by an amazingly talented writer."

"Bad Books" describes five books that have been censored by school districts and public libraries, including Slaughterhouse 5, Huckleberry Finn, Women of Brewster Place, the works of William Shakespeare, and the Bible. I originally gave the speech as part of the International speech competition for Toastmasters International in 1994. The speech won first place in the area contest and second place in the division.
